Stand With Trump – Stop the Coup

It’s time for our elected leaders in Washington to put aside the silly talk of impeachment, accept the results of the 2016 elections, and do the work we sent them to do.  A collapsing ObamaCare continues to deprive Americans of health care choices, and sometimes even denies them access to insurance.  Terrorists continue to target the United States.  Illegal aliens continue to take our jobs.  The tax system is still in need of reform.

Yet one Democratic Congressman, Rep. Brad Sherman, has introduced an impeachment resolution, some of his colleagues are promoting it, and many left-wing activists want Congress to move ahead in an attempt to remove the President.

Is there any justification for impeachment?  The investigation into alleged “collusion” between the Trump campaign and the Russian government has been going on now for a year without turning up any proof.  We can be sure of this, since the army of leakers in the Federal government has been releasing anything which can possibly be used against President Trump, and would certainly make sure any proof of collusion became public knowledge.

The desperation of the Trump-haters can be seen in the hype surrounding the “scandal” concerning Donald Trump, Jr.’s meeting with a Russian lawyer.  This lawyer was not some sort of Russian agent, passing along information to help elect Trump.  She was nothing more than a lobbyist hoping to persuade Trump of the justice of her cause.  One might as well accuse Trump of colluding with the President of Mexico since they met and discussed policy matters with each other, with the Mexican President surely hoping to influence Trump.

Another accusation is that President Trump is violating the “Emoluments clause” (Article I, Section 9), which prohibits a “Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust” in the U.S. government from accepting any “emolument” from a foreign government.  Allegedly, if foreign governments pay for rooms at one of Trump’s hotels, this constitutes such an emolument.  In fact, as anyone familiar with the debates in the Constitutional Convention knows, their concern was for the sort of bribery with which the French King Louis XIV influenced Britain’s Charles II.  It is very doubtful that the purchase of goods or services at fair market value can be considered an emolument as defined in the Constitution.  Furthermore, scholars are not even agreed on whether the emoluments clause applies to the President and other elected officials, or is limited only to those who are appointed to office.

Democrats in Congress need to accept the fact that the voters chose a Republican President and a Republican Congress.  They should quit trying to overturn the 2016 election and join the effort to deal with our nation’s many problems.

The Conservative Caucus, a project of Americans for Constitutional Liberty, is a public policy organization, contributions to which are not tax deductible. The IRS has determined ACL to be a 501(c)(4) organization, exempt from Federal income tax. Contributions to ACL are not subject to FEC regulation or disclosure requirements, and corporate donations are permitted.
