Impeachment of Trump Is Attack on First Amendment

Peter J. Thomas, Chairman of The Conservative Caucus, today described the impeachment of former President Donald Trump as a farce, while saying that the impeachment resolution itself is “an obvious lie.”

“President Trump, in his January 6 speech, was very explicit in calling for peaceful, not violent, action.  He talked to the crowd about ‘marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard’.”

“The purpose of going to the Capitol, he said, was to ‘cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women’.  Never did Trump tell the crowd to attack the Capitol, nor to threaten the Members with anything other than defeat in the next election.

“Donald Trump is being impeached for encouraging people to exercise their First Amendment rights – and nothing else.  And the crowd understood what the President was saying.  Almost all of them remained peaceful.

“And we now know, thanks to the work of law enforcement, that the violent attack on the Capitol was not a spontaneous response to Trump’s speech – it had been carefully planned in advance by a small number of extremists (including at least one Antifa radical, acting as a provocateur).

“That is why only a few hundred people attacked the Capitol.  Tens of thousands refused to join in.  They followed the instructions of President Trump to ’peacefully and patriotically’ make their concerns known.

“Our First Amendment rights are under attack by the radical left, which knows it cannot succeed in turning America into a socialist state unless it shuts down freedom of speech, assembly, and petition.

“If Donald Trump is convicted, they will have won a major battle against the First Amendment.  What chance will any American have if even a former President can be branded as guilty of a crime for merely telling people to use their First Amendment rights?

“That is why the Senate must not vote to convict.”

The Conservative Caucus, a project of Americans for Constitutional Liberty, is a public policy organization, contributions to which are not tax deductible. The IRS has determined ACL to be a 501(c)(4) organization, exempt from Federal income tax. Contributions to ACL are not subject to FEC regulation or disclosure requirements, and corporate donations are permitted.
